Excel 2007 Permanently Save for Older Versions

If you are sharing files with users of older versions of Excel, they either have to install Microsoft's free converter to see the files, or you have to change the file format to an older version. You can change that for each file you save or you can set the Options so that you will always be saving in a backwards compatible format. Note that you will lose features of the newer version, if you used them, when you save as an older format.

In Microsoft Office 2007, Excel defaults to saving worksheets as .xlsx. To change the default setting to .xls in Micro Soft Excel, do the following:

Customize how workbooks are saved.

Customize how workbooks are saved

Besides changing to the features of an older version when you save as an older format, the file extension will change from Office 2007's default .xlsx to the older style .xls.
